Renovation waste bin rental: plan the material before the delivery

A practical renovation waste checklist covering material approval, heavy loads, asbestos concerns, rental timing and contractor coordination.

Quick answer

Start here

Before renting for a renovation, list the materials being removed and get them approved individually. A household bin request does not automatically cover every construction material. Bin and Gone excludes cinder blocks, chemicals and hazardous materials; concrete and other heavy loads require review. Confirm loading limits, access and dates before work begins.

  1. Name the materials

Describe each removal phase and any heavy debris.

  2. Get approval

Confirm accepted items and material-specific limits.

  3. Prepare access

Agree a placement and an unobstructed approach.

  4. Match the schedule

Confirm delivery, seven-day plan and collection.

Turn the renovation plan into a material list

'Bathroom renovation' describes a project, but it does not explain the load. The waste might include cabinetry, packaging, flooring, drywall or fixtures. Give the team a separate description for each material rather than assuming that everything produced by one room can go into the same bin.

Ask your contractor what will be removed and when. Separate demolition from new-product packaging and final cleanup. For several rooms, identify the biggest removal phase first. Discuss equipment and timing using that information instead of a room count.

Get approval before materials reach the bin

Bin and Gone reviews materials case by case. Cinder blocks, chemicals and hazardous materials are excluded. Concrete, soil, brick, roofing material and other heavy or unusual loads must be discussed; this guide does not establish their acceptance. Tell the team whether materials are mixed or separated and flag anything you cannot identify.

Durham Region's facilities publish their own material lists. These do not establish acceptance in a private rental. Check the appropriate waste route and Bin and Gone's agreement separately.

  • List the material type and approximate project extent.
  • Point out dense debris separately from bulky packaging.
  • Ask about any item whose contents or condition are uncertain.
  • Keep excluded materials out of the rental load.

Resolve unknown building materials first

Older building materials may contain asbestos. Health Canada advises avoiding disturbance of materials that may contain it and using a professional to test before renovation. A photo or the age of a room is not a reliable clearance for loading unknown material.

If asbestos is suspected, stop that part of the loading plan and seek qualified assessment. This rental guide provides no asbestos handling or disposal method. Bin and Gone's hazardous-material exclusion still applies; booking an ordinary bin does not resolve a specialist material concern.

Discuss weight before choosing volume

A diagram can help you compare space, but it cannot tell you the permitted quantity of a dense material. Do not plan to fill a bin to the top with heavy debris because the walls appear to allow it. Ask for the actual bin's loading limit and instructions for the approved materials.

Illustrated fleet profiles are approximate calculations. Dimensions and usable capacity need confirmation. Describe the quantity of flooring or extent of cabinet removal so the team can assess it. Update the material discussion if additional rooms are added.

Coordinate the seven-day rental with the work

The confirmed customer-loaded package is $563.87 CAD including HST for the 1 ton minimum, with seven days, delivery, pickup and fuel included. Each additional ton is $226 including HST. Loading labour is separate. Extensions and partial-ton terms need confirmation, so ask about a delayed project before assuming the bin can remain.

Choose proposed dates with your contractor's removal sequence in mind. Leave time to clear the approach and settle placement before delivery. A request is subject to review and availability; preparing a website message does not automatically book a truck or confirm a delivery date.

Give everyone one clear loading plan

Identify who will load, which materials are approved and how excluded items will stay out of the load. Share the agreed limits with everyone helping. Keep the item list available so another worker does not add unapproved material.

Plan the route from the renovation area to the bin and keep the delivery approach available for collection. For a tight or shared driveway, send photos before confirming placement. If the only apparent space is a road, sidewalk or boulevard, ask the responsible municipality about its current requirements before making arrangements.

Common questions

Does the bin rental include demolition work?

No. Customer-loaded rental covers the agreed bin service. Demolition, teardown and crew loading require a separate scope discussion and estimate where those services are offered.

Can I put concrete in the bin?

Do not assume so. Describe the proposed concrete load and ask for explicit acceptance and loading instructions. Cinder blocks are excluded.

Can I mix leftover paint with renovation debris?

No. Chemicals and hazardous materials are excluded. Review Durham Region's household hazardous waste guidance for the appropriate route for household paint and similar products.

What should I do with suspected asbestos?

Avoid disturbing the material and arrange qualified assessment before renovation continues around it. Do not place suspected asbestos in the rental bin. This guide does not provide handling or disposal instructions.
