Quick answer

Start here

Make disposal decisions before packing unwanted belongings. Work backwards from your move, allow time for donation or collection arrangements, and keep the moving truck's route separate from your clearout plan. Confirm rental dates, materials and placement before relying on them in your schedule.

  1. Start early

    Work backwards from key handover.

  2. Sort room by room

Give each item a clear destination.

  3. Reserve access

Plan space for loading and the moving truck.

  4. Check every space

    Inspect storage areas before leaving.

Work backwards from the handover date

Put the move, key handover and any agreed property inspection on one calendar. Add packing time and the dates when bulky items must leave. Your clearout should create space for the move, not become another job competing with loading day.

Use the first pass to identify large unwanted pieces and storage areas you rarely visit. Arrange the disposal or reuse of those items before the final packing rush. Preferred rental and removal dates are requests until confirmed. Keep a little flexibility in the plan rather than making a hard moving deadline depend on an unconfirmed pickup.

Give belongings a destination

For each room, label items move, reuse, approved disposal or decide later. Keep the decide-later group small and give yourself a deadline for it. Use distinct labels on moving boxes and disposal containers so helpers do not confuse the two during a busy day.

Check measurements in the new home before paying to move a sofa or shelving unit that may not fit. For reusable items, confirm acceptance and a collection or drop-off date. Durham Region's Reduce and Reuse resources can help you explore options, but a listing does not guarantee that an organisation will take your particular item.

Check local disposal options against your timeline

For a few items, check the Durham Region collection calendar and the applicable furniture or large-item instructions for your address. Do this before placing anything at the curb. Collection arrangements and your moving date may not line up, so check the actual information rather than relying on a neighbour's past experience.

Keep paint, batteries, chemicals and other household hazardous waste out of the clearout load and follow the Region's special-waste guidance. Electronics should also be identified separately. Do not leave these decisions until the last night, when you may no longer have time to arrange the right destination.

Match the service to the work you can do

A customer-loaded rental can suit a move when you want to clear rooms gradually and have people able to carry and load the approved contents. Bin and Gone delivers and collects; loading remains your responsibility. Its approved rental package includes seven days, delivery, pickup and fuel.

If you need unwanted furniture carried out, ask for a separate crew-removal estimate in Orono, Newcastle, Bowmanville or Courtice. Give an item list, stairs and doorway details, and any heavy or unusual materials. Oshawa service is customer-loaded rental only. Confirm what is included rather than assuming moving help, packing or disconnection is part of a clearout.

Protect space for the move itself

Discuss bin placement with the team and think about where the moving vehicle will need to stand. Include parked cars, shared driveways and the route between the front door and vehicle. Clearout access and moving access should work together, especially if both activities happen during the same week.

Move packed belongings away from the disposal route. Keep travel documents, medications, keys, chargers and essentials in a clearly marked area under your control. Before pickup, check the proposed load and confirm that approved materials and loading limits have been followed. Contact the team if extra rooms or heavy items have changed the scope.

The final clearout checklist

Before leaving the old property, walk through it with this list:

  • Check cupboards, closets and storage furniture for belongings.
  • Inspect the basement, garage and any accessible outbuilding.
  • Confirm reusable items have actually reached their agreed destination.
  • Check that special waste has a separate confirmed plan.
  • Keep retained keys, documents and moving essentials together.
  • Check the clearout load against the approved item list.
  • Confirm pickup arrangements and access with the team.
  • Review any agreed property-handover requirements.

Common questions

When should I ask about a rental before moving?

Ask once you know the address, intended dates and likely disposal items. Leave time for material and placement review and for sorting before delivery. Availability must be confirmed; the website does not reserve a bin automatically.

Can the bin stay while the moving truck is loading?

Discuss the driveway layout and both vehicles' access in advance. Whether that arrangement is suitable depends on the actual property and placement. Do not assume a bin can be moved once loading has begun.

Can I add more items after making the request?

Tell Bin and Gone about changes before loading them. Extra volume, heavy materials or different item types can affect suitability, loading limits and the agreed scope.
